As part of Kulturnatta, Kurant Visningsrom invites you to ‘Phantom Island’ – a group exhibition and public programme centred on Bouvet Island, a Norwegian dependency in the South Atlantic and one of the world’s most remote places.
Few people have ever set foot on the island, but over nearly three hundred years, Bouvetøya has accumulated stories, misplacements, political interests and speculation. The island has been lost and rediscovered on maps, become the subject of scientific expeditions and territorial control, featured in Cold War mysteries, and has subsequently been reimagined through satellite imagery, internet myths and popular culture.
During the evening, there will be a guided tour of the exhibition, during which we will take a closer look at how the artists engage with distance, technology, representation and notions of places we know primarily through images, signals and stories.
The evening concludes with a screening at 7.00 pm of *Alien vs. Predator* (2004), in which Bouvet Island is transformed into the setting for an underground pyramid, aliens and an ancient conflict. The film is a spectacular example of how a distant and inaccessible place can become a canvas for entirely new myths.
